The Pirate's Anchor dive site at María La Gorda

"Ancla del pirata"

depth range:50 feet

features: anchor from the XVIII century on the coral reef.

This dive site (ideal for beginners) owns its name to a giant two ton, eighteen-century anchor found in the place. The anchor rests against coral promontories and is covered with crustaceans and corals. Sponges and gorgonians are common in this region and you are likely to see snappers, bass, wrasse, jacks, angel and squirrelfish.

The dive started with a cruise along the wall close to the top, passing by the swim-throughs that could have done because required going a bit deeper. A few barracuda were swimming nearby and there was also a grouper close by. Growing on the reef were some healthy coral and spectacular gorgonians. The wall itself is not as sheer as at the other wall sites and the channels are more widely interspersed with rocky outcrops breaking them up.

Nigel Alexander Hunt

Welcome to my site dedicated to María La Gorda International Diving Center. I am "poco a poco" researching and updating it with the aim to provide as complete as possible record of the hotel's ancient and recent history; bearing in mind that the goings-on today may one day be of historical interest.

My site is NOT the official website of the current hotel operator, and is by no means endorsed by them; but I am grateful for their help with the research and supplying some of the photographs.

You can make from this site room reservations through the Bizloco eTravel System operated by Cubaism Ltd which has a direct contract with the current hotel operator.

Best wishes for

Nigel Alexander Hunt
